Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Shame, delusion and resignation are everywhere on Winners Never Quit. David Bazan's grim songs come off like allegories without the comfort of clearly stated life lessons. The listener is left to sort out the meaning or moral of gloom-ridden scenarios featuring troubled characters who live in America, the land of the winner. "To Protect The Family Name" is a painfully poignant depiction of a vulnerable drunk who's fallen off the wagon and is begging for another chance. Bazan's slow, almost slurred singing deftly places the listener in close proximity to the drunken protagonist. The drums have a murky sound quality that nicely reflects the song's theme and mood. Similarly, the title tune's enervated drumming matches the sentiment at hand. It closes out the album with just a glimmer of hope, as Bazan sings, "Count it a blessing / that you're such a failure / your second chance might / never have come." --Fred Cisterna

(REAL NAME)
Bazan's 2nd album proper is almost perfect in its pained disquiet - heavily pious overtones don't detract in anyway - if anything, the flavour is enhanced, as Dave bleeds his bible onto the controls. Markedly better than the popularly-favoured 'It's Hard To Find A Friend' - why not bumrush the show and snap this gem up before Pedro The Lion start gracing some front covers.... it's only a matter of time. Prescient I'll be proven to be - Dave Bazan has got the Lord on his side.

4.0 out of 5 stars a cautionary tale, 13 Oct 2001
One man band David Bazan gives a hint of his future greatness with Pedro the Lion's second full length CD.

Winners Never Quit tells the tale of the rise and fall of a corrupt polititian from his twited youth to his suicide. The protaganists belief that he is a god fearing good man is juxtaposed with his ever more desperate deeds.

In a range of musical styles from the slowcore of Finish Line to the rousing emo of Never Leave a Job Half Done Bazan shows what a great story teller he has become.

Its not always a comfortable liten, but its worth it.
