Amazon.co.uk Review

There has been a lot of attention given to the so-called neo-soul sound, most of it focused on male artists. So how come the folks making the best records are women? One spin of ex-Vertical Hold leader Angie Stone's solo debut and it is clear you are listening to a grown-up woman, not some kid with stars in her eyes who is dictated to by a producer or three. No, the deeply felt grooves and offhand sexiness that make Black Diamond sparkle are things that can only come when you've lived a little. Like Macy Gray's On How Life Is and N'dea Davenport's (criminally ignored) self-titled disc, this is the wondrous sound a woman makes when she's free to create her own music but smart enough to keep the status quo satisfied. On tracks like the smoky "Green Grass Vapors" and "Everyday", Stone, with her rich Gladys Knight-like voice and finger-popping élan, conjures up soul's past without making herself a prisoner of it. Not surprisingly for this key collaborator on D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, Stone kicks a laid-back, fluid vibe, but her clear tone and off-kilter way with a melody make you sit up and pay attention. --Amy Linden

CD Description

This is a solo debut by a long-time backup singer who's worked with everybody from Lenny Kravitz to Buckwheat Zydeco. Kravitz and similarly retro balladeer D'Angelo are among the producers here, so the old-school soul sound of most of these tracks shouldn't be a surprise. "No More Rain in This Cloud", for example, cops its groove from early '70s groups likethe Chi-Lites (its lyric quotes from Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears") and there's a very effective update/cover of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man" to boot. Proof that BLACK DIAMOND was made in the '90s: "Man Loves His Money", in which Stone declares her love for a paramour in bottom-line financial terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best soul album of 1999, 14 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Forget Lauren, Erykah, Macy Gray or any of the other pretenders. "Black Diamond" oozes class. Pure soul tracks overlaid with incredible vocals.

Angie Stone has been there and back - writing for the likes of Mary J, Maxwell, D'Angelo and Kravitz over the last 20 years. The album has the kind of feel and vibe that you associate with one of the great soul artists - Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Al Green and The Isley Brothers

Dare I say it - this is a timeless record - she will be massive in 2000! Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Up there with the best..., 12 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Angie's debut is stunning... up there with the likes of last year's best albums by female artists, i.e. Mary J Blige's 'Mary', Macy Gray's 'On How Life Is'...

The influences of D'Angelo are most obvious in 'Coulda Been You' and 'Everyday', but on other tracks, Angie's own distinctive style is shown... 'No More Rain', 'Visions', 'Life Story' and 'Green Grass Vapors' are all brilliantly original, yet still mainstream.

Angie covers two lesser-known songs as well: Marvin Gaye's 'Trouble Man' and Lenny Kravitz's 'Heaven Help', both to a very powerful effect... with slight variations because of her gender!

And Angie's voice is pure bliss to listen to.

She can be let off for the over-sentimentality in her thankyou's in the cover - because the music is pure first class soul - something we have been short of in recent years. Mature, sultry, smooth - Angie Stone is here to stay.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Good tracks the rest boring, 24 Dec 2000
Typical of hearing a good single 'My Life Story' I went and bought this album. The tracks just don't really catch you so you only play the bits you like.
