Product Description

CD Description

If U.K. post-punk originators Joy Division had released only their two studio albums, their almost mythical status would already have been secured. But the appearance of an unfortunate spate of poorly conceived bootlegs shortly after the demise of lead singer Ian Curtis only complicated and added to the band's legend. To redress this problem and more properly honor the band's legacy, Factory Records issued the two-disc, posthumous odds-and-sods collection, STILL. Not a Joy Division album proper so much as a repertory of B-sides, studio outtakes, and live performances, the collection serves toround out the band's story--revealing superlative concert recordings and a few essential studio cuts.
The studio outtakes (recorded at various locations between 1978 and 1980),lack the polish and thematic cohesiveness of their two studio efforts, but display much of the fiery punk bluster of their earliest, most raw demo material. Tracks like "Ice Age" and "They Walked in Line" are hypnotically simple, but effective; with Curtis bellowing, in a convincing terror, lines like "I've seen the real atrocities, buried in the sand". Easily, the highlight is the soaring, awe-inspiring "Dead Souls"; originally a B-side of the single "Atmosphere", it is a sprawling, epic of gothic-rock, and one of the group's signature songs. The balance of the album focuses on a live recording of Joy Division's final performance at Birmingham University on May 2, 1980. Save for a few initial missteps from the mix engineer, it serves as an important document and one of the few extant examples of their live sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Songs From A Classic Band!, 29 May 2001
By A Customer
Some say "Still" is a bad album, but this simply isn't true! The first half is a collection of rare songs/outtakes which have been given some post production by Martin Hannett - to great results! The second half of the cd is a recording of Joy Division's last ever gig, from May 2nd 1980. The quaility of the content is superb throught the disk, from the magnificent and slightly prophetic "Dead Souls", the errie synth ridden "Something Must Break" to the emotional tidal wave that is the live version of "Decades". Just because "Still" looks like an odds and sodds album don't dismiss it. It's a fantastic showpiece of an album, that perfectly highlights just how good a band Joy Division really were. I Definately Recommend this album to all fans of Joy Division, New Order and alternative music in gerneal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better off with the box-set, 8 April 2002

This review is from: Still (Audio CD)
The runout groove on this post-Ian Curtis release/exploitation was a reference to Herzog's 'Stroszek' (the dancing chicken). This was a companion to the two studio albums. The best track here is 'Dead Souls'- the 'Sordide Sentimentale'-flip of 'Atmosphere'. While the Martin 'X' Hannett sample 'Glass' is excellent- the next step on from 'The Idiot' & 'Trans Europa Express'...Of the early songs 'The Kill' & the dodgy 'Walked in Line' (shades of 'At a Later Date') are inessential. 'The Only Mistake', 'Ice Age' & 'Something Must Break' are all rather fine- as good as any track on the debut. 'Exercise One' & 'The Sound of Music' are something else- that building epic sound!! (I have the latter on a bootleg of their High Wycombe date around 1980. They started on it). The cover of 'Sister Ray' is awful, however. All this is on 'Heart & Soul' & some on 'Substance' (avoid the 'Permanent' cash-in). The other tracks are not- taken from JD's final date at Birmingham University. It opens with 'Ceremony'- where IC's vocals aren't mixed properly til hafway through! 'A Means to an End', 'Passover' & 'New Dawn Fades' are powerful here- though where is '24 Hours'-which found it's way onto the purple-factory box edition of this? The live take of 'Transmission' is great- though I'm not so keen on the economical version of 'Isolation'. 'Disorder' is much wilder live- Morris's synth drums are robotic & manic like Can's 'Peking O'. Finally we get a divine take of 'Decades' and the encore of 'Digital'- again, better than the studio take. So, this is worth it for the live tracks- but you still need the box-set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contains some unmissable classic tracks, 17 Jan 2002
By A Customer
An album well worth acquiring for the Joy Division Collector. It is not a finished article. Yes in parts you may be disappointed - there is variable quality and some frustrating sound and performance in the live section, but to deny yourself would mean missing some classic tracks. In particular Sound of Music repays repeated listening. One of their saddest songs New Dawn Fades is even more intensely poignant in its live format. Yet the most powerful track (and in my view their finest moment) is Dead Souls, a monumental work of metallic musical art (originally difficult to get hold of). All in all well worth the money!

3.0 out of 5 stars In my humble opinion...
This album has been rendered redundant by the Heart & Soul box set and the subsequent live releases. The studio material - the important part - is contained in the box set. Read more
