CD Description
PCs are the new pawnshop guitars. Artists attack traditional values with their digital armaments, and the uprising bears fruit in the form of exciting, unfamiliar musical idioms. Frankfurt's Mille Plateaux label was first on the scene in the '90s when techno and process-music experimentation began to merge. With CLICKS_+_CUTS, the label attempts to map the expanded frontier of "21st century minimalism"--that gray area between techno and sound art.
Though earmarked with techno's familiar rhythmic and melodic concerns, this exemplary double-disc set bears evidence of opposite intent. C_+_C represents the next step, as artists exercise the powerful deconstructive and reconstructive capabilities of digital sound-designing tools. Internalized turbulence translates cuts by Vladislav Delay, Reinhard Voigt, Skist, Dettinger, Kid606,Ihan, Kit Clayton, Thomas Meinecke, Curd Duca, Goem, and Pole into dance music by default rather than design. Farben, snd, Ultra-Red, Sutekh, Ester Brinkmann, Panacea, Stilluppsteypa, and Pan Sonic cut-and-paste to create purposefully gap-riddled music for cerebral spaces--not mix-ready monotracks for the floor. The pointillism of Frank Bretschneider, Autopoesies, and Alva Noto transfer visual aesthetics into audible canvases, while the luscious, digitally disjointed melodies offered by Neina, All, Jake Mandell, and Dettinger confront ghosts of pop-oriented pasts.
