Product Description

CD Description

When New Zealand's Split Enz broke up in 1985, the Finn brothers took decidedly different paths. Elder brother Tim married actress Greta Scacchi while going the solo route while Neil founded The Mullanes, who eventually became Crowded House. Following its wildly successful 1986 debut, this Kiwi threesome squeezed out nearly a decade's worth of smart guitar pop reminiscent of The Beatles, the Kinks, and Squeeze before calling it quits in 1996.
This compilation of 13 refurbished and/or remastered tracks consists of stray B-sides andhalf an album's worth of unreleased songs originally recorded for 1991's WOODFACE. Early tracks include "Recurring Dream", a chiming, pre-Crowded House number, and the wah-wah guitar-soaked "Left Hand", a loose workout spiked by some rollicking piano. Neil Finn's hand firmly steers the band's creative tiller through seas of love and pathos with inspiration ranging from his wife (the melodically rich "I Love You Dawn"), to his dog (a poignant demo of "Lester"). The only non-Finn song is drummer Paul Hester's zany, TV-obsessed "My Telly's Gone Bung". "Help Is Coming", an impressive slice of dream-pop from the band's last demo session, provides the perfect epilogue for this collection of melodic manna.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of B sides and unreleased tracks, 26 Jun 2002
By Otto99 "M.A.R.Jones" (Warwickshire) - See all my reviews

This is a great record, showcasing early Crowdies songs through to some of the last material recorded. Some tracks have featured as B-sides in some form, others are unreleased officially but have featured in live shows over the years. 95% is top-class, comprising the usual lovely melodies and slightly off-beat lyrics. Paul Hester's "My Telly's Gone Bung" is thrown in too and well illustrates the drummer's sense of humour, if not his songwriting prowess. And an added bonus is the stripped-back mix of "Private Universe" - a lot of the layers from the 'Together Alone' album version are removed, revealing the beautiful acoustic guitar work beneath.

If you're a first time buyer, get Together Alone first, then Woodface, Temple Of Low Men and finally the debut Crowded House. Or get the Best Of if you must. Then get Afterglow.

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad for an album of b-sides, 16 Oct 2000
By A Customer
"Afterglow" is an album of rare Crowded House tracks and was released after the band broke up. Overall the album showcases the talents of a truly unique and original band merely by the fact that the tracks they deemed were unworthy of being included on their albums are really as good as anything they had ever released. The majority of the album features tracks that were recorded during the "Woodface" sessions, so their greatness does not come as a surprise as "Woodface" was one of the bands best albums. The album is quite brilliant, with it's overall sound being typical of the laid back rock tracks that has characterised the rest of their albums, however although this slow rock is the base for the album's sound, the album does get more innovative and creative and you see the band taking a lot more risks, than they did on any of their official releases. The highlights of the album include "You Can Touch", "Anyone Can Tell", "Recurring Dream", "I Am In Love" and "Private Universe", which are tracks that would've been a welcome addition to any Crowded House album. Overall it's a great album and is a must for any fan of the band or any fan of good rock music

5.0 out of 5 stars must get crowdies hidden gems, 13 Feb 2009
By N. Edginton (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you love crowded house or even just woodface, you MUST buy this album. The songs are great and have grown on me so much that this really is one of my favourite albums of theirs now. Sacred Cow and You Can Touch are my favourite. To be honest I am a massive fan of Neil Finn and was not that impressed with this album on first listen but I do absolutely love it now and being a lover of b-sides it is a must have cd for any fan, and at this price whats stopping you?
