The second this album starts you know it's gonna be something special. But, before you put it on, pour yourself a brandy, light that cigar, turn off your mobile and close your eyes. "'Round Midnight" is, for me, the best jazz tune ever. Mulligan's tone is sublime, and his sax oozes out of your stereo and fills the room with that certain kind of atmosphere you just don't get anymore. Monk is as amazing and erratic as ever, whilst Wilbur Ware and Shadow Wilson play with such restraint that you can't help wondering how people can be SO cool. The production on the album is also something worthy of a special mention. This has to be the fattest, smoothest sounding jazz recording ever. "Decidedly" and "Straight No Chaser" are also high points, but believe me, this album is worth the price purely for "'Round Midnight", so the rest of the tunes are an added bonus. Buy it now, and let it work it's magic on you too...
