BACK BACK BACK!, 6 Mar 2000
By A Customer
A new Shriekback album, you say ? Surely you jest? After God knows how many years in the wilderness post-Sacred City, Shriekback return with a blistering new Album. Entitled "Naked Apes and Pondlife", this is a fine return to form from one of the eighties most original, daring and creative bands ever to come out of Great Britain.First glances at the not very informative sleeves notes had me quaking with fear as the instrument list contained articles like didge, bodhran and -gulp- accordian......but this is Shriekback and they manage to wrestle some of the most amazing sounds from this instruments. Twiddly folk nonsense this is not! After what appeared to be their swansong (Sacred City) this comes as a welcome surprise....why does this band not have an ENORMOUS web presence? This is the perfect soundtrack to Grant Morrisons "The Invisibles" (and therefore "The matrix"). Dark....edgy...humourous....organic....soft..... yeilding....gorgeous.....terrifying.....its all here. Groovy enough to sit proudly along side "Oil and Gold", "Jam Science" and "Sacred City" but accessible enough to lure the unsuspecting....airplay and some sort of promotion/tour willing.....a single, perhaps? Could I suggest "Everythings on Fire"? Although, "Pondlife" "anal Piss-machine" and "String, Sedatives, Weaponry" are my favourite tracks "EOF" is probably the most commercial. This is Genius.....pure and simple. I love them, I want to have their children....and its good to see LU back in the fold, too..... Shriekback are back! And I think I need to go and lie down......
