This CD amazes me. Schmidt's music for the new fantasy-opera 'Gorgenghast', supported by a wild and poetic libretto by the novelist Duncan Fallowell, blazes and croons out of the speakers. Based on Mervyn Peake's trilogy of the same title, and sounding like a cross between classical and rock, the extracts presented on this CD are not only visceral in themselves but provide an exciting musical interpretation / remake of the three novels. Strings and brass are fleshed out by a host of other sounds including electronics and kitchen implements to soothe and punch you. Buy it; then make your mind up.
