I came across this work in mid-performance on the radio the other day, and thought it was Bach at first, then had my doubts. When I heard the composer I was astonished I had never heard of him - and nor had many people I asked. Stolzel deserves better! I cannot think why he is not more appreciated.

The work is performed superbly by people who (like the composer) are not well-known except possibly in the early-music world. The sensitivity is wonderful - quite as moving as Musica Antiqua Koln under Goebel can make it. The voices are very fine, with very precise enunciation. The most moving parts are when the recitatives break into the great Lutheran hymns which punctuate the work - more German than this you don't find! This is a must for any Bach-lover, for any baroque music fan, really for anyone at all.
