Amazon.co.uk Review
This video companion to the Canadian singer-songwriter's triumphant live album confirms in sight what that recording advanced in sound--Sarah McLachlan and her fine, flexible stage band have evolved into a superb live performing unit, breathing added fire and nuance into McLachlan songs that were already stunning in their original studio versions. Always a strong, charismatic singer, McLachlan now conjures a rare balance of delicacy and power, measured here in performances of signature songs that add a new, more muscular edge matching her band's rock firepower. Thus, "Possession" expands beyond its already sensual promise to touch on truly erotic abandon, while "Building a Mystery" focuses its portrait of a narcissistic poseur with a harder edge and a newly amended, adult lyric that's entirely appropriate.

Shot on McLachlan's 1998 headlining tour, the concert captures her in a more theatrical and frankly glamorous (if slightly funky) vein than her fabled Lilith Fair shows: in her floor-length blue gown, sparkling blue mascara, and bare feet, she evokes a more demure, Gen-X cousin to Cabaret's Sally Bowles.

On the DVD: With 23 featured songs, Mirrorball on video adds nine tracks not heard on the CD. The audio mixing is generally excellent, providing some hall ambience but retaining a front-array, proscenium placement to instruments. Shot on film, rather than videotape, the concert preserves the stunning, subtle lighting effects of McLachlan's touring production, albeit at slight visual sacrifice in lower-light segments in which the resolution is grainier. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, 9 Jan 2002
By G. ADAIR - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After falling in love with Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, then receiving a DVD player for Christmas, I took the predictable step of buying this DVD. At just under 2 hours long it represents good value for money (9 tracks more than the equivalent CD release, plus an interview & extra features). The interview is pretty good, about 20 minutes or half an hour long. Check out the 'wacky' camera-work though.

But the concert itself is truly astounding. Sarah has always ensured her music is recorded to the utmost quality, with superb performance and production throughout, and this DVD is precisely the same. From the opening titles it is apparent that the emphasis is on clarity of vision and perfection of sound.

But it doesn't end there. I was astounded by the quality of Sarah's live singing voice - she's amazing! Not only that but her skills as a guitarist and piano player are superb too. She holds centre stage with great confidence, giving a solid performance of the highest quality, conversing with the audience and clearly enjoying herself.

I'd even applaud the running order of the tracks here: Last Dance sets the scene perfectly and leads into a glorious rendition of Building a Mystery - you get a great rush of excitement as the concert begins. Similarly, the first encore ends with a powerful majestic rendition of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, a superb climax to the show, leaving room for a final (and quite gorgeous) recital of Angel, just Sarah and the piano, to round things off.

This has to be one of the finest concert videos (or DVD's) out there. Just sublime.

5.0 out of 5 stars You know you really want it... Just GET IT! It's great!, 15 Jul 2000
Well having been a fan of Sarah for nigh on 5 years this is the best thing to hit the UK since sliced bread! Finally we get to see her in all her glory performing a wide range of her best music and on top of that the quality is suberb, the extra features are a great bonus and the interview is very enlightening. I already own the Mirrorball CD but I had to get this for the extra tracks alone. It's a real shame that the live versions of "Witness", "Ice" and "Elsewhere" don't feature on the album as the versions on the DVD are absolutely amazing. If you're a newcomer to her music this is a great starting place for your collection. I can't recommend this highly enough. I just hope next time she plays the UK, I won't be on my way to France like last time! And hopefully her DVD of 10 years of hits featuring the original videos will come out in the UK too. But anyway, get this - you'll never regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!, 11 April 2002
Wow!!! Just received this DVD and watched it twice as it was *soo* good! Oh course Sarah looks amazing, and her voice is just beyond words. She shows such emotion when she is singing, again - wow! Every track is just to perfection in my opinion are better than the original recordings. Her interview is interesting and a lot longer than I expected. My favourite tracks on the DVD are Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, Possession, Ice Cream, Sweet Surrender and Witness. JUST BUY IT!
