5.0 out of 5 stars The Bolshoi's classic album., 30 Jan 2003
By Jason Parkes "We're all Frankies'" (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
A year or so ago I was chatting to a friend's housemate who had been in 90s band 1000 Yard Stare & we found ourselves talking about The Bolshoi. Fairly drunk I declared Lindy's Party a total classic, despite the fact someone pilfered my tape at some point in the late 80s. I tracked it down, at a budget price, and listened again to an album I played for a few years- till I discovered stuff like Jane's Addiction, MBV and The Pixies.

And it's surprisingly good- OK it's a bit 80s (such as the keyboards on single Please or the synthtastic Can You Believe It), but so is Independence Day by The Comsat Angels & I think that's great! The singles are amongst the weakest tracks- TV Man a bit of a cliche at the time, Talking Heads having done a song of the same name a few years prior to this (not to forget 1983s classic TV Dinners by ZZ Top!). Nice post-modern nods to Ennio Morricone and Monty Norman/John Barry at the end though!

The best songs are largely guitar-orientated affairs, Cracked in Smile advancing on earlier track Pardon Me, while Rainy Day tops Echo & The Bunnymen in the bleak ennui post-punk stakes. Barrowlands is maybe a bit Hollow Hills- but I think Bauhaus are quite amusing & let them off as The Hunger is a cool film! Trevor Tanner & co could write pleasant pop songs with ease- evident on the title track, She Don't Know & the gorgeous Swings & Roundabouts.

Lindy's Party is a classic 80s album, whose strong points far outweigh the negative ones- compare this to nonsense like God's Own Medicine or Dawnrazor to see how bad music associated with the 'G'-word could be! At this price it's great value, and I rate this alongside albums by Associates, Comsat Angels, The Chameleons & The Sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Best, 5 Mar 2002
By gregjkrueger@webtv.net (West Allis, Wisconsin USA) - See all my reviews
Feel its my job to review a band I liked since no one in your country has. This is their best disc with quite a few excellent songs. They tell a story and are well done musically. One has some of the crispest acoustic guitar I have heard and sounds like they are right in the room with me. For me it is also a little cryptic as in one song there is mention of taking clothes from a food store. We have a food store called Kohls and also a Dept. store called Kohls here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I always connect the two from my viewpoint. As with the Police, Lucy Show, and other bands their last album was excellent and one wonders why it had to end. That, I'm afraid, is life. IRS 007

2.0 out of 5 stars Classic? Not quite., 21 Dec 2007
I always thought of "Bolshoi" as one of the pinoeers as the new romantic/ goth movement which so influence Sisters of Mercy and The Mission.

The problem is that whilst may have had an influence on Eldritch and others, this album sounds like a third rate Human League. The title track stands out, but everything else is pretty meaningless.

Maybe The Bolshoi were massively influential, but that doesn't mean that this album is any good. And sadly, it isn't.
