Famed for being the conductor of so many Shostakovich symphonic premieres, Mravinsky's interpretations are required listening for those with more than a passing interest in this composer. This 4-CD set comprises four such symphonies as well as his first violin concerto, performed by David Oistrakh, no less. As a bonus, there are also works by Bartok and Prokofiev.

These are recordings of concerts given in Prague by the Leningrad Philharmonic (except for the violin concerto) between 1955 and 1967. For that reason, anyone wanting an introductory performance for these works should look elsewhere. That is not to say that the sound quality is not good: the engineers have clearly worked hard to produce a clear sound, but some coughs and hiss appear in places.

Shostakovich obviously thought highly of Mravinsky to have chosen him to premiere so many of his works, but by the mid-to-late 1960s there relationship grew colder, so it is interesting to speculate whether Shostakovich would have whole-heartedly approved of the later interpretations here. Nevertheless, Mravinsky demonstrates complete control of the material and motivates his players to turn in some fine performances.
