Big Momma's House is directed by Raja Gosnell, written by Darryl Quarles and Don Rhymer, and stars Martin Lawrence, Paul Giamatti, Nia Long & Terrance Howard. Lawrence plays FBI Agent Malcolm Turner who goes undercover as "Big Momma" Hattie Mae Pierce (Ella Mitchell), so as to hopefully snare escaped convict Lester Vesco (Howard). "Big Momma" is the aunt of Vesco's ex-wife, Sherry (Long), who is on her way to "Big Momma's" to hide out after hearing of Lester's escape.

In spite of baffling critics-and not finding many casual film viewers willing to say they enjoyed it! the film was a surprise hit and opened as the number two movie in North America. It went on to gross over $117 million at the box office and subsequently ensured that a sequel would follow down the line (it arrived in 2006). The film isn't pretending to be anything other than the mindless comedy it is. If viewed on those terms then it can be enjoyed. Sure some of the gags are puerile, and Lawrence is an acquired taste, tho his energy and comedy timing are first rate here. But it does work to a degree. It's been done better in the likes of Tootsie and Mrs. Doubtfire, and the plot, with it's boorish romantic strand, is merely an excuse for "Big Momma" to get into daft scrapes. Yet the action is nicely staged and the pace of the piece never sags. There's also fun to be had in watching Giamatti & Howard looking like they just know they should be doing better stuff than this!.

Forgettable juvenile fluff for sure, but likable enough; in that brain at the door-bucket of popcorn-way. 6/10

TAG LINE: This FBI agent is going undercover... and he's concealing more than a weapon.

Those who are thinking about mugging this southern grandma, should think again. (and RUN!) This senior citizen is packing! She's tough, streetwise and smart.

The film itself is packed full of attitude, huge laughs and a great plot. The talented Martin Lawrence plays FBI agent, Malcolm Turner who dons a fat suit, all in the name of justice.

He goes undercover as Hattie Mae Pierce - Known to the community of Cartersville, Georgia as "Big Momma" - A tough southern OAP. Where Malcolm's main goal is to pursue a dangerous criminal, he also has to keep his identity secret.

So, Turner soon finds himself getting lost in the character of big momma. The trouble is that the caring "Big Momma", is a well known and respected member of the community, so its going to be one hell of task. Though I must say, the folks of Cartersville must be thinking their local saint is going a little senile!

The film is full of laughs and witty one liners, though it has a few well placed emotional scenes, the film is light-hearted and makes great family viewing, delivering nothing heavy and overly dramatic.

There is also an essence of suspense in this film. You keep expecting Big Momma's cover to be blown, but then only finding yourself laughing at the escape tactics used by Malcolm.

This film stands out as one to watch, amongst the other comedies of the early 21st Century.

The only real disappointment is when the end credits begin to roll, But at the same time you are probably wishing your grandma was as hip!

Possibly a great comedy film as the ultimate disguise is tested to limit in this funny heavyweight hit on the screens, literally. Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) is a detective who is given the task of finding out information about a bank robbery that Lester Vesco (Terrance Howard) carried out and supposedly his former flame Sherry Pierce (Nia Long). She lays low at Hattie Mae Pierce (Ella Mitchell) in Georgia.

Now Malcolm Turner has to be turned into Hattie Mae Pierce, but isn't easy due to her oversized and overbearing attitude as tough as pork chops, in order to find out information from Sherry Pierce about the robbery. The film has many funny gags, jokes and surprises as Big Momma goes undercover in the house and is hard to sustain such a disguise for so long. A must have for those who love police comedy cover ups at the best.

big momma's house is classic martin lawrence territory and features an on form lawrence as a foolish yet capable cop who goes deep undercover as big momma in order to save a damsel in distress from a former ex lover and career criminal. The jokes come thick n fast and although the actions a little stale this really is the perfect guilty pleasure for any martin lawrence fans out there.

och its dumb but its fun and what the hell is wrong with that at the end of the day. There are enough silly jokes to keep most fans happy but with films like white chicks and the nutty professor holding similar costume mishaps and being from the same age i would say this is the worst of those films but still fun and enjoyment can be found.

We laughed, and laughed. Perhaps the best comedy film of the year, watched by our family over and over again. A particularly side splitting moment is the "Oh Happy day" scene. We will never be able to watch a Gospel choir in the same light again!
