Michael Nyman is a composer with an instantly recognisable sound, his music often being built upon stark, rhythmic orchestrations dominated by intense string writing. All these traits are instantly apparent in the composer's score for Neil Jordan's film of the autobiographical novel by Graham Greene, The End of the Affair. Featuring Ralph Fiennes, star of The English Patient, this is another artfully English tale of 1940's adultery, and Nyman's music encapsulates concentrated yearning in much the same way Gabriel Yared's Oscar-winning score did for the former picture. Though the rhythms are less driving than in the past, for much of the writing bleak emotions dominate over pure melody, while the lyrical piano writing of "Love Doesn't End" recalls Nyman's work on The Piano.
This score has much the same pastoral melancholy as Nyman's music for Carrington and Wonderland, though it offers little that is sufficiently different to have the startling impact of the composer's collaboration with Damian Albarn of Brit-pop band Blur, the darkly brilliant Ravenous. If this album appeals, a diversely elegant collection of neo-classical film music, The English Patient and Other Arthouse Classics (including themes from The Piano), is also worth investigating. --Gary S.
