This recording of Harry Partch's final masterwork is thankfully rescued from obscurity by the dedicated efforts of Philip Blackburn at Innova. Shame on Sony for keeping it in the vaults all this time.
Always known as an outstanding recording and performance, the digital transfer improves the sound experience by allowing the piece to be heard continuously as written, with greater dynamic range, and clarity of sound over the old vinyl.
Looking back thirty five years or so, it is amazing how contemporary this music sounds. Not difficult listening at all, and the vast forces of the Harry Partch ensemble, made up largely of percussion and string instruments of his own design, these instruments become characters in the action. Performed by dedicated enthusiasts, the performance has warmth and excitement. If you are already a convert to Harry Partch, and don't have this, what are you waiting for? If you are wondering what all the fuss is about, I defy you to dislike this album.
