Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Will Smith is the future of hip-hop--in the sense that Willennium, his follow-up to 1997's Big Willie Style, is sure to dominate pop-rap airwaves and sales. Proud of his kid appeal but also self-mocking (he carries the title concept with the single "Will2K," a party jam built on a sample of the Clash's "Rock the Casbah"), Smith carries forward the early-rap values of good-natured boasting and fun-fun-fun. His desire to remain part of the community is reflected in his savvy choice of guests, who number everyone from K-Ci (some convincing vocal licks on "Will2K") to rappers new-school (Lil' Kim, Eve) and old (Slick Rick, Biz Markie); past and future partner DJ Jazzy Jeff even gets his own four minutes of funk on the scratch-happy "Pump Me Up". Smith also attempts cinematic storytelling on "Afro Angel" and "The Rain", which are admirably solemn, if far from the best things here. Smith may not be the hippest hip-hopper around, but as Chuck D once said of another, very different figure, "Don't tell me that you understand until you hear the man." --Rickey Wright

CD Description

WILLENNIUM is a Will Smith album packed with spicy contributions from top producers such as Kay-Gee, Rob Fusari, Trackmasters, and Rodney Jerkins. It also features the return of DJ Jazzy Jeff. "Will 2K" is a rousing radio-friendly track that has guest vocals from K-Ci over a sample culled from "Rock the Casbah", by the Clash. There are guest spots from Lil'Kim ("Da Butta"), Eve ("Can You Feel Me?"), Tatyana Ali & MC Lyte ("Who Am I"), and the always-comical Biz Markie and Slick Rick ("So Fresh").
Smith packs WILLENNIUM with 15 tracks that are guided by the producing hand of Fresh Prince. "Wild Wild West", from the blockbuster movie of the same name is also included. Though WILLENNIUM might offer a taste ofthe 21st century, it's also a throwback to old-school hip-hop. Other standout tracks include "Potnas", "Uuhhh" (featuring Kel Spencer), and "I'm Comin'".

A great album, going back to the wonderful JJ+FP days!
Definately recommended to any TRUE hip-hop fans, some real feel good tunes with great beats and there's a little treat for Biz Markie fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Of Big Willie, 24 Aug 2003
In the days before "Big Will" abandoned his old-skool hip-hop roots he made this album. His musical career peaked when he dropped the classic "Big Willie Style", but unfortunatley after a string of poorly rated sequels he was eventually dropped by columbia records. For me this album is the last in the line of the Fresh Prince style which made him so popular. He manages to skip from latin funk to ballad to classic old-skool style within the process of about 5 tracks, constantly keepin the feel of the album fresh. I think the best way to describe the record is to list the MCs who Will desided were good enough to share his light. When you take artists such as Eve, Lil' Kim, Sisqo, Biz Markie and Slick Rick to accompany an already proven artist your destined for success. This is why there's barely a weak beat on the album with #La Fiesta, #So Fresh and #Can You Feel me just three of many which stand out, also thanks to DJ Jazzy Jeff's choice of beats. I just wonder what made Big Willie want to include the terrible #Wild Wild West?

1.0 out of 5 stars Willenium a big flop, 8 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I have found that the quality of this CD is nothing to that of the Big Willie Style apart from the one outstanding track Will 2K. I bought this CD thinking that all Will Smith music was the best but after a while I turned it off and decided to go back to the older rap, i.e earlier Puff Daddy.
