Amazon.co.uk Review
This disc is the result of a remarkable experiment in digital prestidigitation. Shellac recordings, made by the first recording superstar, tenor Enrico Caruso, were scanned into a computer and reworked until the voice was separated from the orchestral accompaniment. The surface crackles and hiss were then also removed, so that what was left was "pure" Caruso. The conductor Gottfried Rabi and the Vienna RSO then had the difficult task of providing a modern orchestral accompaniment for Caruso's idiosyncratic and rhythmically very free performances (and not even at modern concert pitch.) The result is an intriguing curiosity, and not dissimilar to those films and adverts where people remain in black and white though their settings are in colour. The wondrous thing is that Caruso's voice still radiates its extraordinary power, even after all the computer jiggery-pokery, and is as compelling now as it was nearly 100 years ago. --Warwick Thompson

I heard this CD reviewed on Radio 3's 'CD-Review' and immediately logged on to Amazon to buy it! To 're-master' the old shellac recordings of Caruso and add a modern orchestral accompaniment seems impossible, but the people at BMG have done it very well. The Vienna RSO do the music justice and, of course, Enrico is superb.

If I have any criticism, the orchestra is a little too forward sometimes - it sounds like Caruso is singing from outside the room - but don't that let that put you off. This is a superb and fun CD - not for the music purists, but if you want to hear Caruso to the best standards that modern technology can offer, this is for you.

Well... technically, it's very well done. It's worth at least one listen for the curiosity factor. But I fail to see any real reason for this project when the original recordings are still available... and far more listenable! The orchestra is outstanding, but Caruso sounds like he's singing on a cell phone. Audio experts may be able to subdue pops, cracks, and surface noise...but they also sacrifice much of the fidelity of the original recording, resulting in a very thin sound. If you thrill at the voice of the great Caruso and have little use for gimmicks, avoid this recording.

I hadn't heard any Caruso before buying this CD and I was mesmerised. There is a hook in every song that draws the listener in and they left me speechless. Those who critise this CD tend to be those who already know the original recordings and I can understand the negative comments. However as an introduction this CD is wonderful. I've now listened to many of the originals but always return to this CD.
