Villa-Lobos' symphonic output has received scant attention until recently, strange because it highlights his remarkable grasp of form and structure; and is among his most accessible and playable music. Anyone doubting his abilities to handle formal structure would be assauged with these works.

This neglect makes judging performance difficult if it is to be useful. However, we know that other of his symphonies are sprawling great things and insensitive handling can reduce them to sheer boredom. No 2 is a priceless example. But compared with other recorded performances, Carl St Clair does a highly competent job. Tempi and thrust are sustained and slow passages are fully 'in the Villa-Lobos spirit'. I'm dying to hear what he makes of the No 2 when he gets round to it.

A great aspect of this recording is that it contains early and late examples of the cycle. I cannot judge how well the conductor keeps to the score or tempi - no scores or comparative recordings are available to me - but I can say his performance comes off with the verve and panache necessary to convince me these are worthwhile listening experiences.

Do not expect the mood found in H V-L's Amazon and 'Choros' works but anticipate some interesting symphonic writing with Villa-Lobos never too far from the (music) page!

The symphonies, like the String Quartets are easily approachable for a newcomer to Villa-Lobos. Unable to award it 4 1/2 stars I gave it the benefit of the doubt and gave it 5. Highly recommended.
