4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Nyman music - but beware!!!, 30 Nov 1999
By P. F. May (St Albans) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Commissar Vanishes refers to the practice in Stalins Russia of removing references to those out of favour.

In some ways this work matches that practice, for in fact it is an earlier work renamed. The pack contains two almost identical recordings. The original 10 year old work 'The Fall of Icarus' has been taken and renamed as 'The Commissar Vanishes' with some minor additions. Both works form this 'double' album.

So if you already have Icarus you probably do not want this.

You have to admire the cheek of Nyman; the amount of time he recycles his old work - but here it is a case of 'just slap a new name on it'.

Suppose the Beatles at their end - under pressure to supply a contract album - just re-recorded 'Please Please Me' and renamed it 'Let it Be'.

But I didn't have Icarus so I am happy. And I think Icarus has the edge slightly - its crisper and fresher. But if I'd paid the full price in a high street store, instead of the discount price from Amazon I'd have felt ripped off.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant., 31 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This is prime Nyman, one of the best things he has ever written for his Band. Intense, difficult, beautiful all come to mind. The fact that there are two versions of music, one in an earlier form, and a new restructuring, on seperate discs should not keep anyone from buying this release. The Fall of Icarus, as far as I know, was never released for purchase on any label at any time. So, this might as well be considered a world premier recording. The Commissar version is better anyway, a more solid piece, with the doodling Nyman did for Icarus completely taken out. Highly recommendable!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Nyman's best, 14 Mar 2008

The English Philip Glass is firing on all cylinders here. Forget the furore over the duplication of music over the two discs, this is heady stuff - punchy, beautiful and utterly captivating.

A must for all Nyman fans and the perfect intro for newcomers, this is damned near genius.
