Amazon.co.uk Review

Given that most people will buy anything with Mario's chubby face plastered on it, the developers of Mario Golf could have taken the easy route with this licence. Instead, they practically ignored it, focusing on gameplay instead. Players can jump straight into the golfing action on one of the game's four courses, but it's a good idea to check out the excellent role-playing mode. In this mode, you create a character and improve his or her golf skills by earning experience points in tournaments, playing mini games, or receiving items from characters in the gaming world.

This is one of the best arcade golf games on any system,. The physics just feel right--if you perform poorly, it was probably your fault rather than poor game controls. The camera zooms in on the action when the ball gets close to the hole, turning many shots into nail-biting experiences. After a few rounds, you get a feel for the wind, the lie of the greens and become hooked on this must-own game. --T. Byrl Baker, Amazon.com

Pros:

  • Terrific, intuitive controls
  • Ability to improve performance of your golfer in the RPG mode
Cons:
  • Not your typical Mario game

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, 4 Aug 2000
By magicjonty (Doncaster, South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
If you haven't got a GameBoy Color yet, then buy one now along with Mario Golf. This game is so good! The original GameBoy Golf had only two courses and the only real challenge was to lower your previous best round. Mario Golf blows this to pieces with stunning graphics and excellent gameplay. There are four courses plus an additional bonus course if you beat all the champions in both matchplay and strokeplay tournaments, and there are numerous sub-games to build up your power and skills.

I only hope that Mario Tennis will be this good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 10 Aug 2000
By A Customer
There is only one fault - you can't play head to head games without two gameboys. A big shame. Apart from that it's quite simply perfect! Don't even consider getting any other golf game. It's more realistic and involved than of the so called golf simulations and with Mario Golf you get the benefit of character development. Oh, and it saves your progress at any point which is vital for commuters. Perfect.
