Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
While Jimmy Page and Robert Plant carried on the Zep torch with hit-and-miss projects such as the Firm, the Honeydrippers, Coverdale/Page, and Page/Plant, John Paul Jones got his hands artistically dirty, producing the Butthole Surfers' Independent Worm Saloon, working on film soundtracks, and collaborating with radical punk diva Diamanda Galas. Not surprisingly, several of the tracks on Jones's gutsy first solo album, Zooma, breathe post-punk fire: the pile-driving title track, wrapped in a gurgling sound collage, pummels a JPJ bass riff with a "sick guitar solo" by the Surfers' Paul Leary. Jones reclaims Zeppelin as his own even as he transcends it. "Snake Eyes", an eerie blues epic arranged with orchestral strings around Jones's superb organ playing, suggests "When the Levee Breaks" filtered through Igor Stravinsky or Bernard Herrmann; and you can't miss the echoes of "Trampled Under Foot" in the bass figures of "B. Fingers". The instrumental Zooma reinforces Jones's integral role in Zeppelin, his influential and still vital bass playing, and his... well, balls. --James Rotondi

5.0 out of 5 stars My 4th fave album of 1999, 14 April 2000
This review is from: Zooma (Audio CD)
"Zooma" is unlike anything I've heard before. It growls, it roars, it pounds and it can seriously damage your hi-fi! Whoever said that the bass guitar shouldn't be used as a lead instrument should be shot - Jonesy's album is all the proof you need. Not entirely an album that goes by the book - it's incredibly creative and brings together elements of Led Zeppelin and King Crimson.

My hat goes off to Jonesy, and also to Robert Fripp on the way he conducts his DGM label. May he be an example to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bass In Your Face!, 13 Feb 2002

This review is from: Zooma (Audio CD)
Why has he kept us waiting this long? Jonesy returns with arguably the most inventive and unexpected album out of any of the ex-members of Led Zeppelin. The material concentrates on heavy rock (Zooma, B. Fingers...), but has elements of Jazz, Blues, Classical and Folk, and leaves the floor open as to where he might decide to go an a follow-up album. The swirling electronic soundscapes sometimes grate a little, but the pile-driving riffs on those multi-stringed basses just blow you away. Smile of your Shadow is probably the prettiest song on the album, and showcases Jonesy's talent on the mandolin. If there is one word, however, that can sum up the whole album, it is POWER!

5.0 out of 5 stars A long awaited album from a genius., 20 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Zooma (Audio CD)
This album is truly magnificent. A must for any of you who like instrumental music at its best. It is much much much better than his album "The Sporting Life" with Diamanda Galas. The tracks on "Zooma" speak for themselves, filled with every emotion. John Paul Jones is not only a multitalented musician but one with an amazing ear for composition. If you buy even just one album this year make it this one.
