Amazon.co.uk Review

Just what is it that you do when the world catches up with you? Dave Grohl's pre-Foo Fighters career was about rebellion and breaking moulds, whether it was in Washington DC hardcore bands (Mission Impossible, Scream) or in Nirvana. When he stepped out from behind the drum kit and put out Foo Fighters, Grohl revealed a nifty knack for a tune and great ear for a guitar riff (and the drumming was still among the best around). He kept it up for the band's second album and the There Is Nothing Left To Lose is firmly in the same vein. That can be a good thing--there are no stinkers here--but after a pair of successful albums that have established him firmly as a talent in his own right, Grohl sometimes feels like he's on autopilot. (And the drumming, for a change, is unremarkable.) Maybe the album should have been called There's Nothing Left To Prove. --Randy Silver

CD Description

'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' is the third album by former Nirvana sticksman Dave Grohl's band, Foo Fighters. A noticeably more polished album than predecessor 'The Colour And The Shape', nevertheless the crisp songwriting and irresistible melodies are still there in full force, making this albuman essential purchase. Includes the singles 'Learning To Fly', 'Next Year', 'Breakout' and 'Generator'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant mixture of musical poetry & rock melodies..., 8 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I have been a fan of the Foo Fighters music for a long time and fell in love with 'The Colour and the Shape'. Although 'Nothing Left to Lose' does have a different sound from their previous material and incorporates some slower rock tunes, I have not been disappointed. As usual, there are the expected songs to be played at full volume such as 'Generator'which has the fantastic combination of guitar riffs, drum beats, great lyrics and the unique Grohl voice which fans have come to expect, but the likes of 'Aurora' and 'Ain't it the Life' really demonstrate the Foo's diversity as a band and thier fantastic songwriting capabilities. I would reccommend this album to anyone - I can't wait to see what the Foo Fighters offer us next...

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply a very good album, 15 Dec 2002
The first Foo Fighters song I heard was Breakout, about 2 years ago on a Kerrang! CD. Since then I had heard nothing of them, until they recently released All My Life and their new One By One album. As much as I like the single, I had heard rumours that the new album wasn't up to scratch, so when seeing this in the shops, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Whether their new album is great or c**p, I'm glad I bought this one. My title sums it up. It's hard to fault this album. Whilst nothing mind-blowing, each song is catchy, reasonably loud and makes you want to sing along/headbang/jump about a lot. From the fantastic opening of Stacked Actors, to the loud Breakout and then the softer, more pop-rock Learn To Fly. Each song on the album is neither too hard or to soft, and each one has some decent guitar work. Don't get the wrong impression, this isn't an average album, it's a great one: nothing new or special, but each track is solid and catchy, and Stacked Actors and Live-In Skin are both brilliant.

I thoroughly recommend this album to any rock fan, just after a solid rock album to add to their collection. Whether it's better than their other 2 albums I can't say, but you can't go far wrong with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different from the older albums, 10 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Having both Foo Fighters albums already I decided to purchase there is nothing left to lose. After listening to the album my first thought was eh?.It's not a typical Foo Fighters album. It starts with the song Stacked Actors,a lively typical Grohl track which you expect.Following are the simply brilliant tracks Breakout and Learn to fly and the quirky sing-a-long Generator. However the album goes more mellow as the tracks go on.Aurora being a very laidback chillout sort of record,Next year (which many may have already heard) could be compared to a Sixpence none the richer track whilst Aint it the lfe sounds almost like a country record.Dont be put off though, although this seems to be a move away from the grunge,Nirvana era and dedicated fans of the previous albums may not like it straight away several listens of the album later and it wont be out of your cd player.Im not bored of it yet and doubt if you buy the album you will be too.
