Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Third Eye Blind's second album will go a long way in helping the San Francisco-based band to shed their corporate-rock label. Less grandiose and obvious than their 1997 debut, the elegantly flawed Blue crackles with energy and dark humor, but doesn't wade in the same pools of gloom and despair as its self-titled predecessor. Frontman Stephan Jenkins has exchanged his intricate stream-of-consciousness musings for more streamlined soulful wordplay. The assertive, inventive guitars recall such big bruisers of yesteryear as Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but without the heavy-handedness. "Never Let You Go", the album's standout, is as catchy as Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl", but with a raw edge and a snarling Jaggeresque rap by Jenkins. Smart, poppy, and ironic, Blue more than solidifies Third Eye Blind's standing as a band on the rise. --Jaan Uhelszki

CD Description

Third Eye Blind has enough vision to swerve clear of the sophomore jinx. While you won't find a "Semi-Charmed" on BLUE,there is enough thoughtful, well-crafted pop to keep the band in the grace of its fans. The album opens with the short, blistering "Anything", a track that cuts out just as the song's hook pulls you in. The radio-friendly "Never Let You Go" bears an unshakable chorus. "Deep Inside of You" shows 3EBto be developing further as accomplished power balladeers. A poetic stream of consciousness takes shape in "An Ode to Maybe". "The Red Summer Sun", which begins as an atmospheric and mid-tempo piece, goes off on a strange tangent that finds vocalist Stephan Jenkins doing his best Axl Rose impression, and then returns to a trippy outro that reprises as a hidden track at the end of "Darwin".
BLUE is a largely introspective affair, especially in tracks like "Darkness", where Jenkins sings, "And the world darkens around me / strange friends surround me". That perspective is the key that makesThird Eye Blind's songs hit home emotionally. The diversityand risks the band takes on BLUE will surely help the groupavoid any one-hit-wonder labelings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 12 Jan 2001
As someone who is thoroughly pissed off with the state of the current UK charts and the lack of decent bands emerging, I have been listening to a lot of american groups lately and quite frankly, Third Eye Blind are one of the best bands I've discovered. I bought the 1st LP for 'Semi-Charmed Life' and completely fell in love with it, and had to buy 'Blue' as well. Its everything an album should be, lyrically and musically and you never lose interest in the album however many times you listen to it. 'Wounded', '10 Days Late' and '1000 July's' are probably the best tracks, but 'Farther' is oddly genius like too - not too mention the short but sweet 'Ode To Maybe'. The UK music press in particular appear to take a cynical view of most US bands which is a shame as it means bands such as 3eb, Matchbox 20 etc. don't get a chance to make it big over here which they definitely deserve to. I would recommend anyone who likes good music to buy 'Blue', as its an album most people should definitely have in their collection. I'm glad it's in mine anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars This aint the blues, 15 Jan 2002
By altheplasterer@hotmail.com (barnsley, south yorkshire) - See all my reviews
Blue is an amazing outburst of power pop orientated rock, with the energy of david beckham on red bull.unlike its predesesor this album as your concentration levels at 100% right the way through.'never let you go',10 days late' are among the stand out tracks and who can overlook the extremly sentimental 'deep inside of you'.'slow motion' will have you singing along to its strange-cheeky lyrics. The 2nd finest group next to the goo goo dolls.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frankly the others hype it too much., 10 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I first heard 'semi charmed life' in my school common room and fell in love with 3EB, buying that album the same day. Blue is fresh, experimental and consistent. However it is not a patch on their other album 3EB... If you ...already own albums by Creed and 3 Doors Down then think about buying Blue as well. ... This album is not as good as the other customer reviews say it is, but it is still a worthy addition to any nu-rock fans record collection.
