Amazon.co.uk Review
Andy Kaufman, an American comedian who died in 1984, was the inspiration behind one of REM's best-known songs. The biopic, starring Jim Carrey as Kaufman, borrows its title from REM's song and also finds the band providing their first film soundtrack.

Besides the original "Man On The Moon", the soundtrack album features an orchestral version of the song and five instrumental backdrops specially composed by REM. Michael Stipe can also be heard duetting with Carrey (in character as Kaufman) on the charming "This Friendly World"; while the real Andy Kaufman gets to trounce Slim Whitman's "Rose Marie" and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". Musical muscle comes from the otherwise unavailable REM song, "The Great Beyond", an enigmatic ballad in the style of "Electrolite". But with Kaufman best-known in Europe for his role in the TV series Taxi, and the dialogue snatches and incidental music having little real meaning outside the film, this is really only for REM completists. --Patrick Humphries

I bought this album purely for 'The Great Beyond' and was prepared to totally ignore the rest of it......until I actually listened. The variation in music is a delight and 'This Friendly World' never fails to bring a smile to my face. The instrumentals 'Miracle' and 'Man on the moon' are dreamy and haunting, and the background dialogue is amusing. If you want something different then this album might be it. Even if it is just so that people ask, "What on earth is that you're listening to?"

Simply an outstanding song. Another tribute to go along with Man on the Moon for Andy Kaufman. Many people never understood his life or the movie, but listen to these two songs for great insight and an emotional uplifting.

The soundtrack only has a couple of good songs on it (man on the moon and the great beyond)and the rest are total rubbish. Spend your money on another R.E.M album if you want some good music.

If you love REM then there are a few tracks that will tickle your tastebuds, however there is also a good selection of other music!
