I discovered HotMetal Pro after trying most of the current packages and immediately liked the easily understandable layout and icons.
I am not a programmer but quickly found I was learning as I progressed. Not one to read any manuals, I just started writing and at each stage I discovered in HotMetal the tools I needed for the work. You could say it taught me the subject. I'm now fairly conversant with HTML and have still never read the books!
I have since shown the program to complete novices of all ages and, with minimal assistance, they had a webpage online within a few minutes.
I've completed over 60 sites now and am now writing 150 page websites for companies still using HotMetal!
The best features - one click choice of working screens from raw HTML to browser view. Virtually everything can be done from the Tags screen which shows a page layout whilst allowing you to very quickly modify text and graphics.
The Attribute Inspector - a optionally floating and resizeable window covers almost all text and graphic settings you're going to need.

I highly recommend this software to all beginners to start publishing on the web immediately, but with the power never to be outgrown as your understanding of the subject increases.

A first class piece of software! A fairly comprehensive manual is provided, something of a novelty these days, but the software is so intuitive it is possible to be up and running almost immediately. The on-line help is thorough and seems to contain few errors or references to earlier versions. I particularly liked the ability to switch between different pages, source, wysiwyg and web views with minumum effort. Being cussed by nature I made some effort to try and crash the program by various means and, so far, I have not succeeded!

Anyone wanting to write web pages should be more than satisfied with this package, it is very fully specified and the addition of on-line tutorials for HTML and JavaScript could well be an added bonus for some users.

I am a long time user of HotMetal Pro (from V3 through V6) and I have yet to find a better HTML editor. This is THE top product for creating web sites. However, Corel bought out Softquad and dumped on ALL HotMetal users. All support and future upgrades stopped! I believe that a cut down version of HotMetal Pro has been incorporated into CorelDraw? Corel have decided to concentrate their efforts on Xmetal, an XML editor! How many XML based sites have you ever seen? Anyway, a good product but you will not get any support nor will there ever be any future upgrades. Oh yes, I seem to remember from our old users forum that it was a bit wonky on any system above Windows 98 unless you downloaded the patches which are no longer available as far as I know. Wake up COREL, this is a potential market leading software! This revue is based on correspondence with Corel and is my understanding of the current situation. If I am wrong I am sure Corel will let me know.
