This intelligent collection couples Berlioz's grandest piece of sacred writing with some quieter devotional pieces, two of them arranged from the music of the Russian composer Bortiansky, and with the "Resurrexit" from his early Mass, the rumbustious brass writing of which he cannibalised for some of the Requiem's most powerful effects. Dutoit brings to this music an instinctive feel for Berlioz's combination of Romantic ardour and the long thoughtful melodic lines that he learned from his study of Gluck. This is a great Requiem Mass partly because it combines show-stopping orchestral effects with meditative passages; it alternates real fear and trembling with a gentle and delicate hope. Ainsley's contribution, in the "Sanctus", has real charm, and the Montreal choir is as fine as any that have tackled this work in its intonation and its understanding of what the words mean. The high quality of the digital sound means that we hear the finely detailed score with particular clarity.--Roz Kaveney
