An uplifting chillout Box Set, now there's an oxymoron., 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The first CD of this compilation starts with two tracks that, by the name of the Box Set, should really be setting the scene for the rest. However, we are led into tracks, which outrightly couldn't particularly be described as Big Beat. If you prefer the 'larger' sounds of Fatboy Slim or the quirkyness of 'Bentley Rhythm Ace' then this possibly isn't the Box Set for you.All this taken into account, the tracks that are on the Box Set are very good, its a shame that initially we are promised a compilation that is uplifting, the sort of CD you should put on before a night out, then we are given a CD, that actually would be quite fitting for coming in after a night out, or even perhaps the morning after. I love this Box Set, there are tracks that will float past, and occasionally those that will make your ears prick up, and find still in your head a few days later, and wonder where you have heard them from. Personally I wouldn't describe the majority of the tracks as Big Beat, they are perhaps more reminiscent of 'Northern Star' by Groove Armada, a kind of laid back, acid jazz / house. Don't be fooled by the first inclusion of the big names of Fatboy Slim and The Wiseguys, they are not really fitting for the rest of the Box Set, and there are some real hidden gems in there If you like something that is unobtrusive, but will still have people asking, 'What's this?' Then this Box Set is perfect. Its just a shame it isn't called something that it actually is.
