Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Roots have always been different from other hip-hop artists: while others are at their best in the studio, the Roots' live show (which they hone by being on the road more often than back home in Philadelphia) has always been their forte; while others acknowledge those who came before them only by sampling past hits, the Roots routinely perform a hip-hop history lesson; while others rely on a DJ, the Roots are a full-functional, take-no-prisoners live band that features vocalist Scratch, who impersonates a turntable. (They've also got human beatbox Rahzel, who makes the music with his mouth.) Despite a minor hit with "You Got Me", from their fourth album, Things Fall Apart, they've never made an album that matches their live show--which is why Come Alive is so special. A collection of songs recorded live during the their 1999 tours (filled out with a handful of studio tracks), it's easily their finest moment on wax (or any other medium). What other hip-hop group could turn a live performance of their biggest hit into an extended jam, highlighting the talents of guest vocalist Jill Scott?

In the early 1990s, Wu-Tang Clan producer RZA was feted for his use of pianos and strings, just as GangStarr's Premier has been recogniSed for his innovative use of rare and classic jazz. The Roots, on the other hand, are led by drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, who probably performs innovative fills while waiting in line at the bank; joined by ace bassist Leon "Hub" Hubbard and keyboardist Kamal, they form a trio that, in another decade, would be one of Blue Note's mainstays. On Come Alive, they get to strut their stuff as never before, resulting in what is easily the best live hip-hop album to date--and, hopefully, just a hint of what is to come from Philly's finest. --Randy Silver

CD Description
The Roots are an anomaly in the world of hip-hop--instead of relying on outside producers and a bevy of loops and samples to create their sound, they do it all themselves. As a self-contained band whose instrumental prowess and interactionis a key part of their sound, the Roots stand to benefit greatly from a live album (another rarity in rap music). Accordingly, COME ALIVE shows off the group's talents in their best light. The bass and drums are locked in together with a funky spontaneity impossible to obtain from a sample or a loop, and the vocals intermingle freely with the rhythms set upby the band. Some guests show up (Common on "Love of My Life", Jill Scott on "You Got Me"), but given the rapport the Roots display with their audience, it's clear that they need no one's help to make their music travel from the stage to the furthest reaches of the rafters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb live album., 10 May 2001
By A Customer
This is an excellent live from album from a group who seem to do things a little differently from other less inspired hip-hop acts. The band come accross as a proper live act with drums, keyboards, human turntablism and beatbox, and even a trombone on the intro to 'Silent Treatment'. The atmosphere of the gig is captured brilliantly on this CD and all the tunes have a wonderful energy about them which makes you desperately want to see them live. The standouts for me are '100% Dundee', 'Silent Treatment' and 'You Got Me' which features the talents of Jill Scott. I would strongly recommend you buy this CD whether you are into hip-hop, jazz, funk, or just appreciate quality music of all kinds. Please don't line the pockets of tired commercial acts like Dr. Dre or Jay Z (or god forbid - Puff Daddy) - invest in some quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the studio work, 14 Nov 2003
I read the reviews for this and waited in anticipation for it but when it arrived I have to admit to being slightly disappointed.

If I had heard it straight off the bat, before hearing Do You Want Some More and Things Fall Apart (from which many of the tracks are taken) I would have been more impressed but there really isn't that much to commend the live versions over the studio-recorded stuff. 100% Dundee sounds particularly flat in comparison. Great version of You Got Me though (with the original songwriter Jill Scott singing the female lead) the track builds to a dizzying crescendo.

The rapping and beatboxing is OK but a bit tinny and sloshing around the beat. I wanted to hear the instruments and improvisation come to the fore a bit more but it still plays second fiddle most of the time and I thought it would be a bit tighter overall [sigh]. There are some classic live albums - The Who Live at Leeds and John Mayall's Jazz Blues Fusion come to mind (I have eclectic tastes alright) but it is a notoriously hard genre to pull off, the production has to be just right (or wrong if you KWIM!) and this just falls short.

Having said that you can tell that this band get a good atmosphere going and to be at the actual shows must be amazing.
