Amazon.co.uk Review

"Taste the culture, know who you are," exhorts a voice in the opening seconds of The Carnival. While Fugees mastermind Wyclef sets a high goal for his first solo album, essentially a follow-up to the Brooklyn hip-hopper's multi-platinum The Score, he never succumbs to feel-goodism or preachiness along the way. Including everything from over-the-top operatic scatting to Bee Gees samples and Celia Cruz as part of its rhythm nation, The Carnival proves that, "Killing Me Softly" or not, the rapper/producer is far from losing his knack for mad fun and games. And, indeed, if you're not careful, you may end up learning something: witness the ballad "Gone Till November", a drug runner's unflinching lament.--Rickey Wright

CD Description

The Fugees are one of the few hip-hop groups who successfully blend elements of other musical genres with rap. Their multi-platinum album THE SCORE reached audiences all over the world due to its universal appeal. Wyclef Jean (1/3 of the Fugees) delves even deeper into his personal well of creativemusicality on THE CARNIVAL, his solo debut.
As a producer, Wyclef doesn't just sample records. He takes a pre-existing track and uses it as a foundation, building up layers of complex textures. Not many hip-hoppers would try rapping over the Bee Gees classic "Staying Alive", but Wyclef does it on "We Trying To Stay Alive" and makes it work. "Guatanamera", which features the vocals of Celia Cruz, takes an old Latin folk song and turns it into a totally contemporary piece. Full of inventive musicianship and devoid of hip-hop cliches, THE CARNIVAL is an impressive next step in the developmentof rap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, under-rated CD, this iz a must buy, 3 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I cannot believe how underrated this CD actually iz. On this album, Wyclef showcases to the rest of the world how good he actually iz at producing material. This CD is in the same league az the amazing 'The Score', this iz shown by the wide range of music styles on this one album, they range from R&B, hiphop, Blues, reggae and of course the traditional haitian music from Wyclef's homeland. highlights of the CD include 'Street Jeopardy' with its hard-hitting lyrics entwined with the smooth chorus. also the excellent 'Tryin to Stay alive' with the remix of the original Bee gees song really gets you in the mood for a party. Having said that these are the highlights, I would be lying if I said that these were the only good songs, they are not, the whole CD is a stroke of genius that only Wyclef seems to possess. As well as the genius lyrics, Wyclef has included the who's who of modern hip hop including five time grammy award winner, Lauryn Hill, whose amazing voice is put to good use on tracks such as 'Sang Fezi' and 'Year Of The Dragon' Also, Pras makes an appearence as well as the Neville brothers and Wyclef's sister, Melkie Sedeck. This album should at least be listened to, if not bought. Go on, have a listen, you'll be astounded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, 29 Sep 2008
Have had this in my collection and wanted to order a second copy and was shocked by the lack of feedback. this album is a classic - its a combination of different musical styles and unlike most songs it actually has a message AND is entertaining. Every one who appreciates good music should watch this.
