Though not quite as mythical as the "Smile" sessions, Otto Klemperer's Petrushka is the classical equivalent. Long a work he identified with, it was recorded over a fraught series of sessions in 1967; the results of which even the great man himself admitted were way below par. There things stood until the Testament team played through the session tapes, and realised that the first day's takes contained a performance worth editing into shape. And here it is--gaunt and granitic like no other. Those who like Petrushka "animation-style"--clean, agile and witty--should steer clear: those who fancy an intense, psychologically-motivated portrayal of the luckless puppet, set against a massive, claustrophobic Shrovetide Fair backdrop, will love it. The New Phil's playing isn't perfect, but it has all the authority and character their chief conductor inspired. With his weighty and ridiculously inauthentic--even in 1963!--Pulcinella Suite as coupling, it's a disc Stravinsky and Klemperer fans alike need to own. --Richard Whitehouse
