5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry in Motion is available, 29 May 2008
By Stephan (Portugal) - See all my reviews
I bought Poetry in Motion on cassette many years ago for the princely sum £0.99 as a bargain clearance item in a well known high street store. I fell in love with it and all the 16 tracks.
The poetry of John Betjeman is not always so easy to read and the efforts of Mike Read in putting the words to music have instantly made the poetry more fun, not that it wasn't already enjoyable. I hadn't realised just how talented Mike Read is, his radio shows were only scratching the surface of his abilities.
I played this cassette to literal destruction and then attempted to find another copy to no avail. I did find a CD advertised but it was sold before I had time to buy it. I contacted the record label, Eagle but they didn't have any copies and said that it was very unlikely to be re-released.
I continued in my quest and eventually found a double CD called Songs released by NMC Music Ltd., (www.n-m-c.co.uk, catalogue number Pilot 148). I bought it without hesitation; it was the only one on offer that I could find, and was delighted to discover that it more than lived up to my expectations. Disc two is the same as except that the first track is Myfanwy is missing, but it is the last track in disc one, which has 13 other brilliant tracks in the same vein. In total there are 29 tracks.
Sadly this CD is virtually impossible to obtain, or so I thought. But for those seeking either Poetry in Motion or Songs, help is on hand. There is a double CD called Words / Music on the Right Recordings label which is available from Amazon with a total of 30 tracks, exactly the same as Songs except that CD two has an additional track. But there is a twist to this, according to the Right Recordings website it is Songs that is on offer and Words / Music doesn't seem to exist. In fact the whole exercise has been a tremendous run around, but it was worth it.
Whatever way you look at it the news is good, every track that is on Poetry in Motion is available on a double CD and I strongly recommend that if you like the poetry of John Betjeman you will love this.
My seven year old son practices his handwriting by copying poetry from such poets as Robert Service, John Masefield, and A.E. Houseman, but his favourites by far are Fernando Pessoa, because he wrote in both English and Portuguese, and John Betjeman, partly because of Mike Read's inspired adaptations to music.
