Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In their decade of existence, A Tribe Called Quest weren't rap's biggest hit makers, but their signature numbers indeed fill this CD with style, eclecticism, and laid-back but deliberate flow. In fact, the group's stature seems to have grown since its 1998 breakup; the continued importance of their music and ideals for many hip-hop fans will only be enhanced by The Anthology's 18 tracks (Q-Tip's hit "Vivrant Thing", from the Violator album, serves as a bonus at No. 19). Those unfamiliar with Tribe's achievement should have their heads and booties set into motion by the fellas' many moods, from the playful "Check the Rhime" and "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" to trenchant commentaries such as "Description of a Fool" and "Sucka Nigga". And with its inclusion here, the somewhat rare and all-the-way out "If the Papes Come" will doubtless re-establish itself as an underground favourite. --Rickey Wright

CD Description

Emerging on the cusp of the '90s, Tribe quickly became thatdecade's hip-hop icons. While Phife, Q-Tip, and Ali displayed unquestionable lyrical skills, they possessed a social consciousness that eschewed thuggish gangsta sensibilities, more concerned with communication than "street" bravado. ANTHOLOGY opens with "Check the Rhime" from Tribe's masterful second album, THE LOW END THEORY. A quintessential Tribe cut, it features the trademark conversational interaction between Phife and Q-Tip, and observations that tell much about the group's philosophy, as Phife declares "I'm far from a bully, and I ain't a punk" and Q-Tip observes that "knowledge is the key".
Of course, Tribe was innovative and impressive straight out of the gate, as shown by its debut's warm love song "Bonita Applebum", which mixes smooth '70s R&B with a sitar sample and the belief that "love never dies". Pioneers of the jazz/hip-hop alliance, Tribe sampled everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Lonnie Smith, achieving the complex, polyphonic tapestry of Public Enemy without the anger. ANTHOLOGY shows that Tribe was always able to find just the right elements to combine for the backdrop to their fast-moving raps. From the breezy jazz guitar chords of "Electric Relaxation" tothe Average White Band horn section on "Check the Rhime".

4.0 out of 5 stars 2CD version a must !, 22 Nov 2001
Perhaps 4 stars is a bit harsh, as this collection contains all the highs from their 5 albums and is a wonderful asset to have in any collection. It shows to illustrate how truly important the Tribe was in its day (up to and including Midnight Marauders). I bought the Anthology, but now wish I'd just got the original albums which play the tracks in their proper context. I guess because its a compilation means it doesn't get the 5 stars.

If you do want to buy this compilation you will probably want to get some of the original albums afterwards. So you MUST MUST MUST (!) get the 2CD version which includes the absolutely essential mixes of Applebum, El Segundo, Can I kick it, Scenario and Oh My God. These mixes on the separate CD are the best work the Tribe ever did. As for next buys, the 5 star 'Low End Theory' is an essential second purchase.

By A Customer
Ive been tracking down a load of songs from a Portishead mix tape for ages now and I found one on this anthology. That WAS the reason I bought it, but having bought it, it has to be one of the most played CDs I have. Every single track is just awesome. DO buy it..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive ATCQ Collection, 11 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This is a great, definitive collection of tracks by one of the most innovative underground/old-skool hip-hop groups ever. All the best tracks are included in this set, as well as a bonus disc featuring some good remixes. The classic 'Can i Kick it' is my personal favourite track. All the tracks are well produced by DJ Ali Shaheed Mohammed and the rapping by Phife and Q-Tip is top notch. I reccomend this as an introduction to A Tribe Called Quest, or as a handy compilation to take on holiday when you can't take your entire CD collection.
