Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Bahia-born superstar CaetanoVeloso is a huge fan of the film makers Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. On Omaggio A Federico E Giulietta, recorded in San Marino in 1997, the angel-voiced Veloso is supported by a Brazilian combo featuring the tasty string arrangements of cellist and long-time collaborator Jaques Morelenbaum. Veloso and his cohorts pay a heartfelt homage to these brilliant Italian film legends in a sweet and swinging South American way. Veloso's evocative compositions, like the sepia-toned "Trihlhos Urbanos" and "Lua, Lua, Lua, Lua", recall his boyhood days watching films such as La Strada and Nights In Cabiria at the local cinema. Veloso's silken, Portuguese-tinged rendition of Nino Rota's "Que Nao Se Ve(Como Tu Mi Vuoi)" adds a different New World flavour to the Italian-based music. With his sexy treatments of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance" and Jobim's timeless bossa nova "Chega De Saudade" from Black Orpheus, Caetano Veloso delivers a lyrical letter to a medium that continues to inspire him. --Eugene Holley, Jr

5.0 out of 5 stars Singer-songwriter's live tribute to the films of Fellini, 14 April 2000
By A Customer
This was one of the Sunday Times'albums of the year for 1999, and makes a wonderful introduction to the most versatile performer in Brazlian popular music

Unfortunately the liner notes and lyrics are all in Portuguese, which means this CD will probably never get the coverage it deserves. But it's well worth perservering, because Veloso's artistry transcends language barriers. He recorded the album live in Rimini, Fellini's home town, at the invitation of the Fellini Foundation. As well as his own songs, Veloso - a longtime Fellini admirer - adds melodies from films such as La Dolce Vita and Ginger and Fred (the latter represented by Let's Face the Music and Dance (sung in English). The accompaniment is beautifully pared-down, cello, drums and acoustic guitars floating in the background. In the notes Veloso explains that his light tenor was not in the best of shape on the night of the concert, but somehow that adds to the emotion on the occasion. The concert makes a slightly slow start, but really hits its stride with Veloso's own song "Lua, Lua, Lua" - from that point it simply gets better and better. At the encore he persuades the audience to join in on a haunting version of Nino Rota's "Gelsomina".

Veloso is better known for his more up-tempo samba-influenced recordings, but this is one of the best albums of his long career. Please give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album yet by Caetano Veloso, 8 Jun 2006
I cannot imagine a better or more satisfying album by Caetano Veloso than this one. The pared-down accompaniment (acoustic guitar, violin, cello) to most of the tracks in this album complement his voice and allow the feeling in each song to dominate. If you appreciate a "complete package" in terms of songwriting, melody and subtle accompaniment, this is the album for you. I listen to this album as often as I can and I am always delighted.
