Here, spread over almost 70 minutes, are extensive suites from the three BBC Scarlet Pimpernel television films staring Richard E Grant as the swashbuckling aristocrat-rescuing Don Juan. The idea was to play the Pimpernel as a costume dress James Bond, and while Michal Pavlicek's score is certainly action-packed, it cuts a much more traditional dash than David Arnold's The World is Not Enough.

The idea was to play the Pimpernel as a costume dress James Bond, and while Michal Pavlicek's score is certainly action-packed, it cuts a much more traditional dash than David Arnold's The World is Not Enough.
Pavlicek comes from Prague, where the BBC filmed these dramas, and where he has a hugely successful career encompassing rock, soundtracks, symphonies and ballet. He offers no really memorable themes, but with just a hint of tongue-in-cheek and modern brashness, Pavlicek's Pimpernel is suitably adventurous, with a big orchestral sound augmented by full choir and the composer's own acoustic guitar work. There are 57 tracks, but fortunately many are sequenced together for greater musical cohesiveness. Though less polished, the writing has something of the flavour of George Auric's flamboyant style, so brilliantly showcased on The Film Music of George Auric. The ultimate collection in this vein, however, must be Swashbucklers of the Silver Screen, a wonderful anthology of musical daring-do including suites from The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Don Juan and Cutthroat Island. --Gary S.
