4.0 out of 5 stars Power with ultimate control., 14 April 2000
By A Customer
These performances demonstrate Celibidache's profound understanding of music. Every phrase is meticulously thought out and presented in such a way that it draws the listener in. Celibidache's amazing control of the orchestra is evident, particularly in the final movement of Respighi's "Pines of Rome" where the crescendo is wonderfully paced giving a tremendous sense of arrival at the climax. The performances of Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben" and "Don Juan" begin with incredible driving force without sacrificing clarity, the calmer sections containing an unmatched realisation of beauty, while the performance of "Tod und Verklarung" is heart-stopping.
