K A Hartmann provides interesting evidence that there might be life after death for the mainstream German symphony. Most of the music here was composed in some sense before World War II but only fully orchestrated and released after it. Stylistically there is much that could have been written thirty or forty years earlier than either. Some of the music is youthfully exuberant; some struggles a little (the fourth, for strings, starts promisingly but it became a real effort of endurance for me to sit through its later pages); while some is vibrant and I was glad to have discovered. The sixth symphony in particular matches the last description, and if you take this set on the premise that barely four or five years ago you would have been delighted to have bought a single symphony as good as this for the price at which the entire set is now on offer, then it's a no-brainer that you'll be pleased with the value for money across this set.
Ingo Metzmacher is appropriately energetic in the fugato writing (to which Hartmann is attached) and sensibly ready to indulge (e.g. in the Fifth) where Hartmann allows the woodwind and brass some inflections rooted in more popular music forms. The recording quality is consistently good. If you are minded to explore without expectation of uncovering a new Mahler or Henze, this set is likely to give you some happy entertainment.
