Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Gentle Birkenstock-shod Lilith Fair fans who casually drop this disc into their CD player may be shocked by the raw power of the opening track, "Go", a punkish, guitar-driven call to action that once and for all blows away the notion that the Indigos can't rock. Recorded with London ensemble Ghostland (Sinead O'Connor's backing band on her 1998 Lilith dates), Come On Now Social doesn't abandon the Georgia duo's familiar folkish sound, but expands it to include soul ("Peace Tonight"), funked-up mountain music ("Ozilline"), full-on rock ("Compromise"), and blistering Steve Earle-style country ("Faye Tucker"). Guest artists abound, including Sheryl Crow, Luscious Jackson's Kate Schellenbach, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, the Band's Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, and Natacha Atlas, but they don't overshadow Emily Saliers and Amy Ray, who are at the top of their game here. --Daniel Durchholz

5.0 out of 5 stars Indigo Girls, brilliant as ever!, 5 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I have to thank my friend for introducing me to the 'Girls' a few months ago and I've been hooked ever since. This album encapsulates all that is good about them, Amy's raw edge, Emily's achinglyly truthful lyrics, mixed in with some good old singalong country.
Their styles are very different, a true ying and yang, which together makes beautiful music.
I must admit to having a preference for Emily's songs, the lyrics are so touching and universal in their honesty, everyone has been there and felt that! Listen out for a hidden track at the end "Philosophy of Loss" A searing expose of the cynical collaboration between church and state.
Go girls!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the IGs at their best, 11 Aug 2002
Before I start let me just qualify the following review with these words. If you're already an IGs fan, then you must buy this record. If you're not a fan (yet) then wait until you are and then buy it. The simple reason for this is that this album is not, in my opinion, representative of the IGs usual style. In fact, there is no one style in this album as it came at a time when the girls were experimenting with a lot of different directions in their music. The reason I say this is not their best album is because I happen to love the more rootsy folk/rock the girls are famous for. I also prefer their acoustic tracks - the songs where there are just two voices and two guitars are definitely the IGs at their best.

Having said that, Come on Now Social is full of good songs (standouts being Go, Cold Beer and Remote Control, and the hidden extra, Philosophy of Loss.) They all suffer from some overproduction, but every indie band who've ever lived end up overproduced when they're on a major lable.

All in all, this record leans further to the rock end of folk/rock than the IGs have ever gone before. Play it when you feel like cranking up the volume and singing along at the top of your lungs, and to hell with the neighbours. Just don't expect to be playing it daily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 7 Jun 2000
By Louise (London) - See all my reviews
I have to agree with the other two reviews - this album is just brilliant, the IGs hit the nail on the head everytime, with their lyrics and music. It is just such a shame they aren't promoted over here as well as they deserve to be.
