Charbonnier continues the complete viol works of Marais. It is all beginning to appear rather samey both in music (compared say to Schenck and Forqueray) and performance (compared to Perl, Pandolfi, even Savall - if only he wouldn't chat throughout) by now, alas. Perhaps this is really the 'classical' voice of French viol music - with all the good and rather dull tings that may imply to some. The playing is fine - but as I say not differentiated enough - this is also the fault of the continuo which is quite generous (viole. theorbe and clevecin), but sounds flat. A guitar (not courtly enough?) might have spiced things up. But the absolute worst thing is their continuing to have the silly little titles (I mean 'gavotte') read out by some actrice. Why? They just to have the 'dulcet tones' of Marielle (who acted (well) in Tous les matins du monde and hence was a selling point for people who don't actually like or known the music) but this doesn't even have that specious excuse. Stick to Savall's anthologies in general, still.
the chaconnes are the best of course
