4.0 out of 5 stars Symphony No 1. - try it....and be patient!, 30 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Symphony No. 1 (Audio CD)
Joe Jackson is perhaps best known for his Seventies songs like "Is she really going out with him?" and "Steppin' Out". It doesn't take long to realise that we have a talented and accomplished instrumentalist and composer here with more than a passing interest in styles such as Jazz and Jive. Symphony No. 1 sees Jackson explore these talents to greater depths. The Symphony is composed for a jazz-rock ensemble and is in four movements representing the four stages of life. After a quiet, uncertain beginning reflecting birth, the music in the first movement becomes more confident, exploratory and energetic like a child, with themes and ideas being introduced that appear and are developed later on. The second movement reflects youth: the music is energetic and boisterous. This is followed by the sombreness of mid-life. Optimism returns in the final movement with a handful of variations based upon the previous three movements. The level of musicianship is excellent (with Jackson himself and personnel like guitarist Steve Vai - no wonder!) and the sound quality has certainly benefited from 24-bit recording. This should be on the shopping list for any Joe Jackson fan - simply to witness the versatility of the man. It's an album that is hard to categorise, it's interesting and engaging, and much the better for it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, Joe, 13 April 2009
I bought this as an MP3 download from Amazon, to see what Joe Jackson had done, back in 1999. I've listened to it many times, but find it very hard to enjoy.

He has written such a breadth of strong, melodic songs across the years that it's disappointing to find this symphony so un-melodic (if that's a word). He just fools around with some very minor themes - nothing memorable or enjoyable. Just jazz-rock tootling. There's little pleasure in listening to this one.

I think I'll stick to Joe's mainstream albums (I've just listened to his Blaze of Glory CD, which is magnificent). And I'll stick to the great classical composers when I'm in the mood for a symphony. Sorry, Joe.
