DeMille, and no score recreates the emotional ambience of this spectacular filmmaking era better than Elmer Bernstein's music for The Ten Commandments (1956). Tracing the life of Moses (Charlton Heston) from birth and abandonment through enslavement until he reaches his God-ordained destiny as the leader of Israel's children, DeMille's picture benefits strongly from Bernstein's seemingly limitless ability to create inspired melodies. The director loved Richard Wagner's leitmotif concept--the system of assigning themes and motifs for different characters and narrative events--and instructed the composer to use it as a storytelling device. Whether it is the noble theme for Moses, a lush offering for Queen Nefretiri (Anne Baxter), the exotic, dance-oriented source material, or a stunning description of the final exodus - not to mention the parting of the Red Sea - the power of Bernstein's full-blooded, symphonic music cannot be oversold. This MCA disc, a re-recording prepared by the composer in 1960, offers 60 minutes worth of unforgettable highlights. Though the film's running time of 219 minutes makes one yearn for a more comprehensive, multi-disc presentation, this release should be in every film music collection. --Kevin Mulhall

The review above is incorrect for this disc. It applies to the disc on the previous page under this title, where Moses is holding the tablets above his head. That disc is a stereo re-recording of the soudtrack by Elmer Bernstein :MCA disc, ASIN no. BOOOOO2PJI. (originally issued on the Dot label) See the review under that disc for more info. on both discs, and a brief comparison of the two. In the hope that this clarifies the situation somewhat ..?!
