Simply put, the greatest recording of this opera - or any other baroque opera. (Minkowski's "Ariodante" is an equal). One of Handel's greatest works gets a brilliant reading by a conductor (Jacobs) who has a profound knowledge of the idiom, a FANTASTIC cast headed by the star mezzo Jennifer Larmore, accompanied (in the true meaning of the word) by Concerto Koeln in this, the most complete recording of this opera. As much attention is lavished on the recitatives as on the arias and their decorations in the da capos. A truly exciting and demented performance. Highly recommendable with no reservations. At this price you would be silly not to get it, especially if it is your first baroque opera purchase.

This was my first experience of a complete Handel opera and now, some fifteen years later, baroque opera is what is mostly listen to! Coming back to this recording I have to admit that there have been others since that I prefer (of other operas) but I still think that on balance, this is still the best version of 'Giulio Cesare' currently available. Jacobs conducting of Concerto Koln is still wonderfully fresh. I like Jennifer Larmore's forthright assumption of the title role and whilst there are now better baroque sopranos around, Barbara Schlick was a good Cleopatra at the time and is still preferable (in my opinion) to Kozena's quasi-mezzo interpretation for Minkowksi. Derek Lee Ragin suits the creepy Tolomeo and Bernarda Fink is still by far the best Cornelia on record. Marianne Rorholm has been surpassed now in Sesto's arias both in complete recordings (Von Otter and Eirian James are both preferable) and in recital discs. Minor roles are all well taken. I still enjoy returning to this recording and still consider it to be the best currently available. Minkowski's extremes of speed on his rival recording are a problem as are (for me) the casting of Cesare, Cleopatra and Cornelia. Jacobs is the version I would recommend.

Questo Giulio Cesare è all'altezza delle più belle opere di Haendel: le arie, praticamente tutte meravigliose, si susseguono una all'altra lasciando l'ascoltatore senza fiato. Alla riuscita contribuiscono naturalmente i cantanti, tutti molto bravi, ed il direttore, semplicemente perfetto con la sua orchestra.
Da acquistare ad occhi chiusi.

This IS the best Ciulio Cesare on CD. Not 100% perfect, but very close. The speed here is not to fast that someone does. Specially in "Va tacito". This recording is 7 min. Read more
