If you know your Mahler's Fifth, and you want to hear it again, in a revised, totally new form, Scherchen will be your architect. Never this music sounded to modernistic, as if the orchestra was playing with the notes just being written by the composer.
Scherchen starts calmly, but his tempi furiously engage the orchestra in a inner torment. The second mouvement, "Sturmisch" really has its nome accomplished: the instruments seem new ways of expressing pain, or seem newly-created instruments: you will think twice if you are really listening to violins, woods or timpani. The "Adagietto" seems the most simple thing, played as a very inner deal of the strings, but the "Finale" is really the brave part. Mahler will sound like a composer of the future, and the extreme inner strenght and abyss of this music, in a very quick pace, invade us completely.
There are some flaws in the orchestra, somethimes; and it must be said that Scherchen revised some of the scores, but be prepared. Something very rare and new is happening: you will be able to listen to Mahler as if it was for the first time again.
