Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The First Concerto can live or die by its own parody. Overplay it, and it's about as funny as bad slapstick, treat it straight and it's mesmerising in its black humour, always within a hair's-breadth of crossing the line into sheer insanity. Dmitri Alexeev is a gruff but never harsh soloist, the trumpet-playing of Philip Jones apparently effortless, the ECO sounding anything but English (a tribute to their conductor). The Second Concerto is, on the surface at least, a far more amiable animal, though with Shostakovich things are never quite as simple as they seem. The second movement contains one of his best melodies, a veritable love-song, which Alexeev plays simply and affectingly. As a bonus, you get the Assault On Beautiful Gorky. Written for a patriotic film, it's a stylistic flashback to the romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky. And, as if any further incentive were needed, the disc comes at budget price. --Harriet Smith

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain album still holds its own., 27 Mar 2006
By Ian Boswell (Ayr United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Since its initial release, this version of the two piano concertos has consistently been rated as one of the best. The recording is well balanced, with the piano in a pretty natural perspective relative to the orchestra. This contrasts with the likes of Leonard Bernstein as pianist and conductor, with the piano very forward. Alexeev's interpretation is exemplary, as is his playing. For those who do not know the second movement of No. 2, it was once described by an industrial chemist as "pure Rachmaninov, distilled down to a single line". Bliss!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bear without a sore head, 9 Jan 2001
By A Customer
The Second Concerto is what most people will be looking for and it would be difficult to find a better performance or recording. It is played with just the right balance of restraint and emotion from all concerned. The string playing at the beginning of the 2nd movement seems to encapsulate all the suffering of the Russian people both now and in the past. As for gruff, well...Shostakovich is a bit of a gruff old bear of a composer isnt he ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, 6 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Even if this CD wasn't available at budget price it would still be highly competitive. Alexeev is a wonderful soloist and the ECO plays, in turn, with both great depth and vivacity. Personally speaking, I think this CD is worth it's price if only for the gorgeous Andante of the 2nd concerto. It's beautifully played: elegiac and mournful. Simply beautiful for all its wistfulness.
