I bought this one on a bit of a whim as I was flicking through the newly released ECM stuff way back at the end of '99. There's no better way to listen to new stuff than to pick albums/artists at random and you can be reasonably sure it's going to be interesting on this label, all that Northern European cool and everything.

The first time I really listened to this was on a noisy Routemaster London bus, so the quiet bits I really had to strain to listen to. here are a couple of occasions when the piece builds to the start of a cresendo and it just stops, left hanging to return to the slow gentle strings and soprano. At first this style was kind of annoying but about 24:00 minutes in, it starts to build again but this time it kept going and going, turning into some kind of folk inspired whirl only to tail off again to the gentle lament of the title.

I was hooked. I've listened to it so many times now I've realised that the slow gentle lamenting bits are utterly beautiful and a perfect counterpoint to the occasional bursts of full orchestra. I even got my ex's dad into this guy after playing him this album (and he's like, dead musical and stuff).
