Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As part of the Urban Takeover collective, Aphrodite has produced some brilliant funky drum and bass remixes of the Jungle Brothers, Luniz, Moloko and Audioweb, and on his own he's been belting out top-notch jungle since the genre's inception in the early 1990s. His debut album is gloriously predictable--and that's a good thing. While other high-profile junglists turn to coffee-table jazz on their LPs, Aphrodite sticks to what he does best: dark and funky jungle. So instead of head-nodding jazz noodling, we get dark, bowel-shaking funky basslines, old school hardcore samples and rip-roaring breaks, all chopped together with a venomous urgency more suited to the dancefloor than your front room. While Aphrodite won't win any awards for innovation or woo a new generation of fans, it will delight his followers and any lovers of jump-up drum & bass. --Matt Anniss

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but dated., 28 Mar 2006
By Labal (Nottingham) - See all my reviews
Gavin King/Aphrodite's full length debut is a good listen, but there's not enough innovation to make it last as an album, or even variation to make you listan to the whole thing over and over again.

Outstanding tracks such as Rincing Quince and Spice are the benchmarks, but rather than actually building on his own good material King has a tendency to repeat it. Odd tracks do still get put on the decks every now and again but all in all an album you're far better off with New Forms or even Timeless, which predate this by some margin yet seem to have stood the test of time better.

4.0 out of 5 stars whats up with the track listing?, 10 Dec 2002
By rob (Stroud, Gloucestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The only reason i originally wanted to purchase this CD was because I thought the track 'dub moods (the greateset trick)'was on it. However when I received the CD I was shocked when I realised that the the track listing on the this site is completely different to that on the actual CD! Despite this initial flaw in my purchase, I listened with an open mind. I wasn't dissapointed. This album has some quality tunes on it and I find it quite chilled out at times in comparison to the drum and bass I usually listen to. Its got a nice almost funky feel to it and the tracks blend nicely into each other. However, I still prefer darker more intense drum & bass. So in my opinion it's nothing speacial, yet not bad at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars King of the Beats, 30 May 2001
By A Customer
This recording is simply brilliant. An excellant intro track leads you into the slightly mediocre Cross Channel but from there on it it gets better and better, leading you through the pure genius that is Badest Mutha Funkster, Rincing Quince, Style From the Dark Side '99, King of The Beats and Woman that Rolls. They're just all ace. Aphrodite has a really distinct style that you could argue gets samey, but some great MC'ing samples interludes keep the whole CD fresh. Anyone who likes Drum and Bass will like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome CD from the master of Jungle.
Aphrodite has been writing these tunes from the dawn of jungle, it's just a shame it has taken nearly 10 years for him to produce this superb album.
