Olivia Newton-John. A lot of people will remember her as Sandy, John Travolta's love in 'Grease'. Others will remember her from hits like 'Physical' and 'I honestly love you', to mention but a few. In the early 90's Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery and recovered. 'Gaia' (= Mother Earth) tells of her journey.

Like many of her fans I'd been looking forward to this album. Knowing what it would be about (her battle with cancer, her concerns for the environment, etc.), I knew that this would be her best album to date. I also thought it would be the hardest one to listen to, as she would show her innermost feelings. And fears. It would be like reading someone else's diary.

I was right about the first, wrong about the second. In my opinion it's definitely her best album to date and a very uplifting one as well. One that makes you think. But you're not secretly reading her diary: she's willingly sharing it with you.

The result of all this, is a very good, positive and personal album. From 'Trust yourself' all the way to 'The way of love'. Each song has a short introduction of why it was written.

About some of the songs: 'Silent Ruin' was especially written for the documentary 'The Last Whale'. A powerful song that still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. 'Don't cut me down'. A wonderful, slow song straight from the heart about man threatening the forests. 'Why me?' and her counter-question: 'Why not me'. Bad things can happen to anyone. So why not me? Makes you quite concious about the way you think. 'Not gonna give into it'. An up-beat song. The title speaks for itself! My other favourites on this album include 'Trust yourself' and 'No matter what you do'. Two up-beat songs filling you with positiveness.

In short: I highly recommend this album. It's great to listen to.

This is a totally different album from the little diva, she wrote all the songs herself when going through health problems, and the songs really show how she was feeling. The album is magic, and almost relaxing. It all sounds so natural and not like music. Well worth getting.

I have enjoyed listening to this ONJ album - amost 7 years after it was released! I would say that the quality of the album overall is good - great backing music and vocals, but Olivia's voice at times doesn't seem quite up to the demands she is making of it! However, the lyrics are generally good (apart from, in my opnion, one or two rather mawkish and cringe-making tracks) and upbeat. I'm sure that this is a must-have for all Olivia fans!
