5.0 out of 5 stars "Yeah, play that thing!", 26 April 2002
By Daddy-O (wemarsh@farmwise.com) (St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
"Now then, Mr. Lyttelton, don't monkey with it there. Yeah, play that thing." Subtitled "One man went to blow," this is the second in a four-volume series presenting 100 original singles recordings made by Humph and his regular band as it evolved between 1949-59. "Monkeying" with the original 78's and re-mastering to the digital format has resulted in a product of excellect quality, clarity, and balance. Although these recordings are now 50 years old, it's not hard to imagine you are sitting in the front row of a live concert. The great thing about this CD is that all 25 are really good tracks, - a mixture of foot-tapping traditional numbers (e.g. Fidgety Feet, Chicago Buzz, The Dormouse, Hoppin' Mad, and of course, Don't Monkey With It); interspersed with a judicious balance of sedate blues numbers (e.g.Trogs Blues, Apex Blues, Closing Time.) In spite of the sub-title, Humph has plenty of able help with the blowing from (among others)Wally Fawkes (clarinet)and Keith Christie (trombone). The rythym section of Micky Ashman (string bass), George Webb (piano), and George Hopkinson (drums & washboard) complement the front line to produce a truly distinctive sound. This is a CD that you will want to play all the way through from track 1 to track 25 - then immediately start all over again. Yeah, play that thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Lyttelton - some scarce items - 1951-52, 4 May 2009
By Hugh Palmer (Suffolk, Uinited Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A more-or-less complete slice of vintage Humphrey Lyttelton sides recorded between January 1951 and October 1952.
Includes tracks recorded 'live' at the then new Royal Festival Hall (July 1951 - Festival of Britain year), and Conway Hall (a couple of sides, November 1951 - pre-dating the well-known Conway Hall concert of 1954).
Like the other volumes in this series, issued about a decade ago now - and increasingly hard to find.
The great majority of items are from EMI master tapes (product issued under licence from EMI), and conequently of excellent sound quality.
Highly recommended.
