Omar, Britain's version of the US's Marvin Gaye, comes back with his fourth album exposing his advanced skills as a lyricist, musician and singer. Just by listening to the opening track, which is an instrumental prelude into the next song, any fan of Omar knows they are in for a treat. Instrumental preludes are his trademark and sets up the listener for his world of excellently crafted songs and music. "The album's title track, "This is Not A Love Song," is a jazzy little number featuring the angelic vocals of Stevie Wonder protege, Syreeta. The arrangements of the instruments-- horns, violins, synthensizer-- are telltale of Omar's classical training and natural instinct of R&B. The songs "Whenever," Golden Brown," "Spring Step," "Years to Come" and "My World" shows his affinity to write and arrange (along with his collaborator David Frank) music that incorporates the different influences of jazz, bossa nova, reggae, hip hop and classic soul throughout the 13-track cd (12 songs and 1 remix). It gives the listener a taste of musical landscapes held together with his soulful voice and meaningful melodies. With each of his previous albums, "Music," "There's Nothing Like This," and "For Pleasure" respectively, each album shows his growth and he is obviously becoming a seasoned artist constantly producing excellent material. "This is Not A Love Song" is his latest example of what a long and most likely fruitful musical career he has ahead of him.
