5.0 out of 5 stars EPIC, 4 Mar 2002
By DAVID BRYSON (Glossop Derbyshire England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
After the disastrous premiere of his distinctly uncompromising concerto the young Brahms predicted
that it would be popular. 'He would, wouldn't he?'
will not do as a comment: Brahms was not like that. Today I wonder whether there is any real consensus why it is as popular as it is, but while we wait for that one thing has become increasingly clear from the piano competitions as well as from the concert-hall and recordings -- it
is a piece that attracts good performances, so one ought to be finding that the competition for first place should be fierce. Only it isn't -- this performance bestrides the rest like a colossus, the rest including other performances by Serkin himself. The moment he strikes that first quiet chord you know what you are in for and you do not have long to wait for it. What starts as the arioso that escaped from the St Matthew Passion builds up dramatically to those frightful martellato trills and the entire long first movement develops with a fluency and command
and rhythmic subtlety that I have not heard in any other reading. It is powerful and weighty but never heavy. The musing episode after the chorale-like second subject, the rhapsodising duet with the romantic horn-call, the thunderheads he builds up at the start of the development -- all this puts this performance in a class of its own.
The slow movement is of the same calibre, dead slow in tempo, building up grandly after the reprise of the main melody and sinking down finally through some pianissimo trills that Michelangeli might have envied. And so is the rondo, taken fast with really superb fingerwork and general panache and a thrilling build-up in the sequence before the final chain of trills. I haven't mentioned Szell and the Cleveland. It's up to them to set the scene, and I never heard it as powerful as this. Had you realised that at the opening only half the orchestra is playing? Extraordinary, the whole thing.

The fine introduction-and-allegro pieces by Mendelssohn and Schumann are as good in their way.
They do not seem to be played very often, which is a great pity, but obviously if you own them on disc you can hear them as often as you like. Here the orchestra is the Philadelphia under Ormandy, and you would not think to hear the Schumann number that he is poorly regarded as an orchestrator. Serkin is on magnificent form throughout and the start of the Mendelssohn piece
is particularly striking. This is a record in a million.

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic!, 30 Sep 2008
By Mr. D. A. Littlewood (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a titanic performance of the fieriest of Brahms concertos that has long been a favourite of mine. Serkin was a tremendously exciting pianist and here he is caught on a good day in full command of his considerable powers. This is a very large scale performance, fiery rather than grand, which it should be, as this is a young man's concerto. Szell accompanies wonderfully, challenging his soloist to greater and greater intensity. Just listen to the start of the recapitulation of the first movement. The encores are slighter pieces but well played.
