A seven-year wait for a sequel either means no-one could think of something as good until now, or no-one could think of something better to do. Take your pick. Avoiding just what the name Jean-Claude van Damme does for a picture, there has at least always been a great track record with their scores. Here, Don Davis--fresh from a resounding success with his avant-garde score for The Matrix--takes over from where Christopher Franke left off on the original movie. The preponderance of Jason Miller's guitars make this a more accessible score (try the rocking "Jet Ski Spree"), and even Davis's self-performed electronics stretch beyond the soundscape format. The original didn't establish a hero theme and nor does Davis try (all the characters are anti-heroes at best anyway). Sure there's an old flame ("Hillary Remembers") to re-humanise Luc, but a little piano tinkling isn't fooling anybody. Those guitars mean he's bad! Alongside The Matrix this shows Davis to be a versatile talented time bomb about to explode. -- Paul Tonks
